MAJOR

ENGLISH MAJOR:
A total of 36 hours with grades of "C" or better, including 18 hours at the 300- or 400- level, is required. Courses other than those offered only as pass/no pass may not be taken on a pass/no pass basis for this major.

Required courses:
ENG201 Varieties of Literature (3)
ENG330 Shakespeare (3)
ENG450 Senior Seminar (3)

Also required for LILA majors (secondary education language arts), and strongly encouraged for middle-school language arts:
ENG406 Introduction to Linguistics: The History and Structure of the English Language (3)

Required: 9 hours from the following. (Majors are encouraged to take all four
survey courses.) Effective Fall 2010, students entering under the current catalogue are required to take all four surveys.
ENG230 American Literature I (3)
ENG231 American Literature II (3)
ENG307 British Literature I (3)
ENG308 British Literature II (3)

Required: 18 additional hours of ENG electives.

MINOR

ENGLISH MINOR:
A total of 18 hours with grades of "C" or better, including 12 hours at the 300- or 400- level is required. Courses other than those offered only as pass/no pass may not be taken on a pass/no pass basis for this minor.

Required: 18 hours of ENG.

Note: ENG101 may not be counted as part of a major or minor.
An English major may wish to consider minoring in Spanish, to strengthen his/her
general knowledge of languages, literature, and culture. See Spanish for requirements for the minor.
