Tom’s of Maine rewarded Wilmington College’s Grow Food, Grow Hope initiative with a $20,000 grant that will provide for the doubling of a program that teaches vegetable gardening to persons adversely affected by the local economy.

16th Annual Banned Books Read-In Planned at Watson Library

Students, faculty, staff and other Wilmington community members are invited to read 10 to 15-minute passages from books that have been banned anywhere in the world at Wilmington College's 16th annual Banned Books Read-In. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the main floor of Watson Library.

A discussion of popular science myths will open Wilmington College’s Issues & Artists Series Sept. 22 when Dr. Phil Plait speaks on “Bad Astronomy” at 7:30 p.m., in Hugh G. Heiland Theatre. Other programs include “Behind the Swoosh: Sweatshops and Social Justice” with Jim Keady on Oct. 8; “Chitram: A Portrait of India,” Feb. 2; and “Pieces of War” with Kenny Carnes, March 25.

Exhibit by Art Professor Opens Harcum Gallery Season

WC art professor Hal Shunk is presenting an exhibit of his paintings and works on paper as the Harcum Art Gallery at Wilmington College begins its 2009-10 season. Shunk’s exhibit will run through Oct. 24 and is open weekdays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and by special appointment.

Freshmen Introduced to Volunteer Service

Wilmington College’s new crop of students took to the streets Saturday (Aug. 22) to lend a helping hand on a number voluntary service projects. The several hours as volunteers represented a quick immersion into one of the College’s hallmarks — community service — as they entered their third day of new student orientation.
